How to Pass the CASAS STEPS Listening Test: Level E Mastery Guide

How to pass the CASAS STEPS Listening test

Welcome to the ultimate strategy guide for the most advanced stage of the CASAS STEPS Listening test. Here we are going to teach you how to pass the CASAS STEPS Listening test. If you are aiming for NRS Level 6 (ESOL 6), you are facing the most academic and professional version of the exam. Level E (Forms 629L and 630L) is designed to challenge your ability to synthesize information and follow complex workplace logic.

In this blog, we break down the specific structure of the Level E exam so you can use every second of the test to your advantage.

The Structure of the Level E Exam

The Level E CASAS STEPS Listening test consists of 39 questions in total. The test is strictly divided into two parts, and knowing how to navigate them is essential for a high score.

Part 1: Comprehension (Questions 1–23)

This section includes professional dialogues and detailed announcements. These questions test your ability to catch main ideas, find specific details, and provide summaries.

  • The “Double Question” Prep: In Level E, the dialogue or announcement does not repeat. However, there is a built-in advantage: The question is repeated. You will hear the question once before the dialogue/announcement plays, and then hear it again after it finishes.
  • Pro-Tip: Use that first hearing of the question to “prime” your brain. If the question is “What is the main summary?”, you know to ignore small details and focus on the big picture from the start.

Part 2: Next-Response (Questions 24–39)

Once you complete the first 23 questions, the testing system will pause and a new window will appear with this prompt:

“PART 2. Now listen to the dialogues and complete the conversations.”

In this section, you will hear a short interaction that stops suddenly. You must choose the most logical “Next Line” to complete the conversation.

  • Important Difference: Unlike Part 1, these Next-Response questions do not have recorded question prompts. You must rely entirely on your social and professional logic to choose the correct reply.

Level E Content Area Blueprint

According to the official CASAS Content Standard Blueprint, Level E is weighted toward high-level conversation and summarization. Here is the breakdown of the content areas and approximately how many questions you will see for each:

Content AreaSkill Description% of TestApprox. Items
DialogueContinue the conversation (Next Line)41%16 Questions
SummarySummarize announcements and talks22%8-9 Questions
Main IdeaIdentify the main topic of the conversation18%7 Questions
DetailsRetell key details (Who, Where, When)19%7 Questions

Level E Question Examples: What to Expect

To help you prepare, here is a look at the four main types of questions you will encounter. We will analyze these in even more detail in our upcoming sub-blogs!

1. Main Idea (18%)

  • Example Question: “What are the man and woman talking about?”
  • Example Transcript: Two managers discussing the budget for a new office expansion.
  • Focus: Identifying the “Big Picture” topic within the first 10 seconds.

2. Main Summary of a Conversation/Announcement (22%)

  • Example Question: “What is the best summary of the announcement?”
  • Example Transcript: A HR director explaining new health insurance deadlines and telling everyone to visit the portal to sign up.
  • Focus: Finding the “Final Action” or conclusion of the talk.

3. Details (19%)

  • Example Question: “When is the meeting?” or “Where is the location?”
  • Example Transcript: A coworker mentioning that a project deadline was moved to next Tuesday at 3:00 PM.
  • Focus: Catching specific “Wh-” information hidden in the conversation.

4. Next-Response / Next Line (41%)

  • Example Conversation:
    • Speaker A: “I didn’t realize Spanish and Portuguese were so similar.”
    • Speaker B: “Yeah, many native speakers can understand both quite well.”
    • Speaker A: [Correct Choice: “I didn’t realize the languages were so much alike.”]
  • Focus: Choosing the response that fits the social context and tone.

Top Training Tip: The “Pre-Listen” Advantage

Because the question is played before the audio in the first 23 questions, you have a massive advantage. If the prompt says, “What is the main summary of the dialogue?”, your brain should immediately switch to “Summary Mode.” Don’t get distracted by small numbers or names; listen for the final decision!

This blog is your roadmap, but we are just getting started. Follow our upcoming posts to master every section of the Level E exam:

The 7 Pillars of Level E Success

To fully prepare for the exam, you need to master seven distinct listening domains. We have created a specialized strategy guide for each one. Explore them below to build your expertise:

1. Mastering the Main Idea & Summary

Learn how to filter out background noise and synthesize the beginning, middle, and end of complex professional dialogues.

2. Identifying the Purpose

Understand why a speaker is talking. Is it a request, a resolution to a conflict, or a professional recommendation?

3. Finding Supporting Details

Master the art of catching specific info—like times, locations, and costs—without falling for the “pivot” distractors.

4. Speaker Tone & Attitude

Learn to “read between the lines” to identify professional skepticism, cautious optimism, and workplace hesitation.

5. Mastering Inference

This is the “final boss” of Level E. Use logic to find answers that are implied but never explicitly stated in the audio.

6. Next Line: Conversational Logic

Part 2 of the exam makes up over 40% of your score. Learn the pragmatic rules for completing professional conversations.

7. Exam Day Strategy & Blueprint Mastery

Align your practice with the Official CASAS Blueprint and learn how to manage test fatigue.

Level E Success Checklist

  • The 5-Second Rule: Always pre-read the questions and answers before the audio starts to “prime” your brain for what to listen for.
  • Professional Mindset: Scenarios are almost always workplace-based. Ask yourself: “What is the most logical professional outcome here?”
  • Listen to the End: Many Level E questions have “pivots” (like “but” or “however”) near the end that change the correct answer.
