CASAS STEPS Level A Reading and Listening — What You’ll Learn

Reading (ESOL 1 / Level A)

  • Picture vocabulary: identify common items (phone, bus, milk, nurse, ticket, calendar).
  • Forms, labels, signs, ads, short notes: read simple words/phrases and answer basic questions (who, where, when).
  • Purpose & details: “Why was this written?” “Where should you go?” “What time?”
  • High-frequency words: days, times, prices, places, phone numbers, simple instructions.

Listening (ESOL 1 / Level A)

  • Dialogues: one turn per speaker; choose the best reply to continue the conversation naturally.
  • Short announcements (~30–40s): catch one key fact (time, place, phone number, or instruction).
  • “What’s next?” items: choose the logical next line or action (call, go, wait, bring ID, etc.).
  • Focus areas: basic details, everyday vocabulary, and continue-the-conversation skills aligned with CASAS entry-level blueprints.

How to study (quick routine)

  1. Start with a short Reading quiz (forms/labels or signs) to learn the words and context.
  2. Do a matching Listening quiz (simple dialogue or announcement) on the same topic.
  3. Repeat: Reading → Listening for the same theme to connect sounds, spelling, and meaning.

This simple routine supports daily CASAS STEPS Level A Reading and Listening practice and steady progress.

Study Guide for ESOL 1 (extra help)

CASAS STEPS Level A Reading and Listening is designed for true beginners who need short, clear practice that feels like the test. If you are just starting ESOL 1, the most important skills are recognizing everyday words, understanding simple instructions, and choosing the best reply in a short conversation. Use picture vocabulary and tiny texts to notice numbers, names, dates, and action words like “bring,” “call,” “go,” and “wait.”

What to expect on test day: Level A Listening uses one turn per speaker dialogues, brief announcements (about 30–40 seconds), and simple “what’s next?” items. Questions are short with three choices. Level A Reading focuses on forms, labels, signs, notes, ads, and messages. You will answer questions about purpose (“Why was this written?”) and basic details (who, where, when), plus very common vocabulary such as days, times, places, prices, and phone numbers.

How to study: Do one quick Reading activity and then one Listening activity on the same topic. Read the question first to know what to listen or look for. In dialogues, choose the reply that sounds natural and keeps the conversation going. In announcements, write down one key fact (time, place, phone number). Keep sessions short (10–15 minutes) and repeat several times a week. Small, frequent practice works best for memory.
