CASAS STEPS Level B Reading and Listening — What You’ll Learn

Reading (ESOL 2 / Level B)

  • Short everyday texts: forms, labels, signs, notes, ads, and simple emails.
  • Schedules & times: read calendars, class schedules, store hours; answer who/where/when/how much.
  • Purpose & details: “Why was this written?” “What should you do?” Scan for numbers, dates, prices, places.
  • Vocabulary in context: common work/school/community words and phrases at Level B.

Listening (ESOL 2 / Level B)

  • Dialogues with 1–2 turns per speaker: choose the best reply to continue the conversation naturally.
  • Short announcements (~30–40s): catch one or two key facts (time, place, phone number, instruction).
  • “What’s next?” items: select the logical next action or line (call, bring ID, go to Room 12, wait, etc.).
  • Focus areas: high-frequency vocabulary, details, and continue-the-conversation skills for Level B.

How to study (quick routine)

  1. Start with a short Reading quiz (email, note, or schedule) to preview words and ideas.
  2. Do a matching Listening quiz (dialogue or announcement) using the same topic/words.
  3. Repeat: Reading → Listening for the same theme. Short, regular sessions (10–15 minutes) work best.
This routine supports steady CASAS STEPS Level B Reading and Listening progress and builds confidence for forms like 623/624 and similar items.

Unit structure inside this course

  • Reading block: forms/labels/signs, simple emails or notes, schedules; questions about purpose and details.
  • Listening block: 1–2 turn dialogues, brief announcements, and “what’s next?” items (three options).
  • Answer keys: each item includes Competency, Task Area, and Content Area labels.

Why this matches the test

At ESOL 2 (Level B), CASAS Listening grows from single-turn exchanges to 1–2 turns per speaker and keeps announcements short. Reading emphasizes short, practical texts and simple emails/schedules. Our CASAS STEPS Level B Reading and Listening materials follow those patterns so you practice exactly what appears on test day.

FAQs

Do the Listening items match CASAS formats? Yes. Level B uses dialogues with 1–2 turns per speaker, short announcements (~30–40s), and simple “what’s next?” items with three choices. Which competencies appear? We draw from everyday areas such as Basic Communication, Consumer Economics, Community Resources, Health, and Employment. How often should I practice? Aim for 15–20 minutes a day—one Reading quiz and one Listening quiz on the same topic.
