CASAS STEPS ESOL 3 Reading and Listening — Levels B–C

CASAS STEPS ESOL 3 Reading and Listening is designed for learners who are moving from late Level B into early Level C skills. You’ll practice short Reading texts (emails, notes, schedules/calendars, simple memos and ads) and train your ear with dialogues that typically use 2 turns per speaker, brief announcements, and “What’s next?” items. Every quiz mirrors CASAS formats and includes clear answer keys labeled by Competency, Task Area, and Content Area. Use this course as daily CASAS STEPS ESOL 3 Reading and Listening practice to strengthen vocabulary, details, purpose, and light inference.

CASAS STEPS ESOL 3 Reading and Listening — What You’ll Learn

Reading (ESOL 3 — late B to early C)

  • Everyday texts: emails, notes, memos, ads, signs, and short instructions with a few steps.
  • Schedules & calendars: read times, dates, rooms, abbreviations; answer who/where/when/how much.
  • Purpose, details, light inference: identify the reason for the text, locate key facts, and choose the most likely idea.
  • Vocabulary in context: school/work/community words, polite requests, and common phrases.

Listening (ESOL 3 — late B to early C)

  • Dialogues (≈2 turns per speaker): choose the reply that continues the conversation naturally. Some sets may still use 1–2 turns at the easier end.
  • Short announcements (~35–45s): catch one or two key facts (time, place, phone number, instruction).
  • “What’s next?” items: select the logical next action or line (email the teacher, go to Room 203, bring ID, etc.).
  • Focus areas: high-frequency vocabulary, details, short inferences, and continue-the-conversation skills.

How to study (quick routine)

  1. Start with a short Reading quiz (email, note, or schedule) to preview words and context.
  2. Do a matching Listening quiz (2-turn dialogue or announcement) using the same theme/words.
  3. Repeat: Reading → Listening for the same topic. Short, regular sessions (10–15 minutes) work best.
This routine supports steady CASAS STEPS ESOL 3 Reading and Listening progress and builds confidence with the question styles you’ll meet on test day.

Unit structure inside this course

  • Reading block: emails/notes/memos, ads/signs, schedules/calendars; questions on purpose, details, vocabulary-in-context, and simple inference.
  • Listening block: ≈2-turn dialogues, brief announcements, and “what’s next?” items (three options).
  • Answer keys: each item shows Competency, Task Area, and Content Area labels.

Why this matches the test

At ESOL 3, CASAS Listening commonly uses two turns per speaker in dialogues while keeping announcements brief and information-dense. Reading emphasizes practical texts (emails, notes, schedules) and begins to include light inference with vocabulary in context. Our CASAS STEPS ESOL 3 Reading and Listening materials follow those patterns so your practice looks and feels like the test—even as you step into early Level C complexity.

FAQs

Do the Listening items match CASAS formats? Yes. ESOL 3 uses dialogues with about two turns per speaker, short announcements (~35–45s), and “what’s next?” items with three choices. Which competencies appear? We cover everyday areas such as Basic Communication, Consumer Economics, Community Resources, Health, and Employment through realistic school/work/community scenarios. How often should I practice? Aim for 15–20 minutes a day—one Reading quiz and one Listening quiz on the same topic. Small, frequent practice builds confidence.
