CASAS STEPS Level C Reading and Listening — What You’ll Learn

Reading (ESOL 4 / Level C and D)

  • Everyday texts: emails, notes, memos, ads, signs, and instructions with several steps.
  • Schedules & calendars: interpret times, dates, rooms, abbreviations; answer who/where/when/how much.
  • Purpose, details, inference: identify the author’s purpose, locate key facts, and choose the most likely idea.
  • Vocabulary in context: school/work/community words; polite requests, short idiomatic phrases.

Listening (ESOL 4 / Level C and D)

  • Dialogues (≈2–3 turns per speaker): choose the reply that continues the conversation naturally; watch for polite forms and short clarifications.
  • Announcements (~40–50s): capture two or more key facts (time, place, phone, next step, exception).
  • “What’s next?” items: select the logical next action or line (email the teacher, bring ID, complete a form, go to Room 203, etc.).
  • Focus areas: high-frequency vocabulary, multi-step details, brief inferences, and continue-the-conversation skills.

How to study (quick routine)

  1. Start with a short Reading quiz (email, memo, or schedule) to preview words and context.
  2. Do a matching Listening quiz (2–3 turn dialogue or announcement) using the same theme/words.
  3. Repeat: Reading → Listening for the same topic. Short, regular sessions (10–15 minutes) work best.

This routine supports steady CASAS STEPS Level C Reading and Listening progress and builds confidence with the question styles you’ll meet on test day.

Unit structure inside this course

  • Reading block: emails/notes/memos, ads/signs, schedules/calendars; questions on purpose, details, vocabulary-in-context, and simple inference.
  • Listening block: ≈2–3 turn dialogues, concise announcements, and “what’s next?” items (three options).
  • Answer keys: each item shows Competency, Task Area, and Content Area labels.

Why this matches the test

At ESOL 4 (Level C and D), CASAS Listening typically increases turns per speaker and packs more information into short announcements, while Reading emphasizes practical workplace/school/community texts and vocabulary in context. Our CASAS STEPS Level C and D Reading and Listening materials follow those patterns so your practice looks and feels like the test.

FAQs

Do the Listening items match CASAS formats?
Yes. ESOL 4 uses dialogues with about 2–3 turns per speaker, short announcements (~40–50s), and “what’s next?” items with three choices.

Which competencies appear?
We cover everyday areas such as Basic Communication, Consumer Economics, Community Resources, Health, and Employment in realistic scenarios.

How often should I practice?
Aim for 15–20 minutes a day—one Reading quiz and one Listening quiz on the same topic. Small, frequent practice builds confidence.
